We are a 5 doctor practice in Parkston and Wagner, South Dakota. We have a main clinic in Parkston with a fully functional other clinic in Wagner that is 38 miles away. We are predominately cow/calf. 80% cow/calf feedlot, 10% canine, 5% equine, and 5% feline. We currently employ two technicians, and five other assistants. We have Abaxxis blood machines, gas anesthesia, and cornerstone software in both clinics, and digital radiography in one of the clinics with a automatic processor in the other clinic. We have numerous chutes with scales for working cattle. The Wagner office is only 15 minutes away of Fort Randall Dam that has excellent hunting and fishing above and below the dam. Rural Technologies, Inc. (RTI), located in Brookings, SD is currently looking for two full time Animal Technicians, either certified or not depending on experience, to join our contract research team. Our contract research animal team currently consists of a clinical research veterinarian, one full time registered veterinary technician, one full time animal technician, and student labor, as needed. We perform contract research involving vaccine efficacy studies, nutritional studies, safety studies, etc. Currently, we work primarily with cattle and hogs, but are strongly considering possibilities with chickens and mice. RTI is also involved with several research grants, as well as laboratory based studies. A brief job description includes all aspects of animal work (i.e., sample collection, daily chores, feed ordering and maintenance, etc.), facility cleaning and maintenance, some writing and literature research, and potentially some laboratory work, among other things. Watertown, SD - I am looking for a full-time vet tech to start at a new clinic in Watertown, SD, in mid October. The work week will consist of 4-10 hour days (no week-ends, except possible on-call to be worked out). I have been in this area practicing for about 15 years, but this is a new practice in a building that is being remodeled. I will have a trial period of 90 days, after which I will provide $150/month toward health insurance, days off, and pet insurance. I am always glad when people want to continue to learn and be challenged, so I would also pay for some continuing education. Veterinary Technician Job Responsibilities: All duties are performed under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Technicians are not limited to these duties but are excluded from performing surgery, prescribing medications, and diagnosing.

Complete patient history in exam room. TPR (know normal values HR/RR/Temp). Collection of various samples (blood, urine, fecal, skin scrapings, etc). Laboratory tests (CBC, urinalysis, fecal floats and smears, cytology, i-stat machine, and idexx machine, snap tests). Knowledge of isolation of diseases. Assist and/or apply bandages. Place IV catheters. Give medications/injections (oral, eye/ear meds, topical). Injections/blood draws (IM, SQ, IV, IN, jugular, cephalic, saphenous, femoral). Prepare treatment sheets for all hospitalized patients. Carry out treatments of hospitalized patients. Clip and clean wounds. Prepare and sterilize surgical instruments, gowns, and drapes. Prepare surgery room when needed (move anesthetic machine, take out supplies). Take and process radiographs. Knowledge of EKG, pulse ox, BP, and other monitoring devices.
Knowledge of infusion pumps, centrifuge, oxygen cage, anesthetic machine, autoclave. Administer SQ fluids to patients. Administer preanesthetic/anesthetic drugs. Prepare prescriptions accurately. Educate clients on procedures, medications, etc
Knowledge of emergency aid and treatment (CPR, crash cart materials, establish open airway by intubation). Restrain animals for procedures. Stock exam tables, treatment area with supplies. Create estimates, enter charges for clients. Ensure proper forms are filled out (Euthanasia, Surgery consent, Pet Services, Red Alert, Admit, Surrender forms). Knowledge of front end (credit card machine, check reader, care credit). Answer phones-if receptionist can't, record all calls on phone log. Charge out clients/take deposits for patients staying at the clinic. Maintain cleanliness of clinic. Wash, fold and put away laundry. Keep waiting area clean (windows, floors, rugs, front counter). Keep bathrooms clean.

Veterinary Assistant

Canine dental care. Use laboratory equipment of varying complexity. Read, understand, and follow a study protocol. Perform mathematical calculations involving simple algebraic relationships; operate a calculator. REGISTERED VETERINARIAN TECHNICIANS WANTED FOR NATIONAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AND RESPONSE POSITIONS, JOIN THE NATIONS LARGEST ANIMAL HEALTH EMERGENCY RESPONSE ORGANIZATION.

The USDA NAHERC program is a national animal reserve emergency corp. that is comprised of Veterinary Medical Officers (VMO), Animal Health Technicians and Veterinary Medical Students (AHT) assimilated into an elite cadre within Emergency Management response community. The National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps (NAHERC) started in 2001 protects public health by providing a ready reserve of private and State veterinarians and veterinarian technicians to combat threats to U.S. livestock and poultry in the event of a large outbreak of an exotic or foreign animal disease. NAHERC staff can be activated and supplement existing USDA-APHIS employees for periods of 3 weeks for domestic deployments or 30 days for international deployments. These positions are paid upon activation of the NAHERC. However, during a disaster, the size and scope of an incident can easily overwhelm conventional local animal health resources and could be devastating to the Cattle, Beef and Dairy industries. The NAHERC is an Emergency Response organization designed to provide large scale federal assistance during an animal event. Previously NAHERC was activated and responded to the 2001 UK FMD outbreak, the 2003 Newcastle outbreak in California and the 2002 LPAI in Virginia. When an animal health emergency occurs, an immediate response is necessary to protect both animals and people in support of the National Response Plan and Essential Support Function #11.

To qualify, NAHERC members must meet all qualification requirements at the time of application. MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS: Veterinary Medical Officer - Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education (AVMA). The AVMA web site, has a listing of all AVMA-accredited veterinary medical schools. Animal Health Technician: Life experience and/or educational experience in the animal health field. Current veterinary students apply under AHT.
