Veterinary Technology Program

The four-year Veterinary Technology curriculum leads to a B.S. degree and allows you to control the direction of your education through the choice of electives or a minor field of study. The pre-veterinary technology or first year of the program is open enrollment. Students interested in veterinary technology have the opportunity to take courses that will help them decide if they want to apply for the limited-enrollment professional portion of the program. A maximum of 24 students are selected each spring to enter the professional portion of the program the following fall. Application materials for the professional program can be downloaded by clicking on the word APPLICATION .

Those classes offered by the department to first year, pre-veterinary technology students are Introduction to the Veterinary Profession, Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals lecture and lab, Companion Animal Breeds, Medical Terminology for Paraprofessionals, and Animal Restraint. Students are also eligible to enroll in a Clinic Observation course, Veterinary Science 196, Field Experience. This course offers career exploration through observation and work opportunities in veterinary practices. If, for any reason, you don't continue into the professional portion of the program, the credits earned during the first year can be transferred to almost any other NDSU major.

Topics that you will study in the professional portion of the program include clinical pathology, radiography, pharmacology, anesthesiology, microbiology, surgical nursing and animal diseases. You will work with cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, dogs, cats, birds and laboratory animals. In addition to lectures and demonstrations, we offer a great deal of practical experience. After completion of all the veterinary technology courses, students enroll in a 12-credit clinical externship. Your entire academic career is planned to allow you to adapt to individual employer needs after you graduate. To get a list of the courses needed, click on the word CURRICULUM
